Here in Indianapolis, we enjoy beautifully varied light throughout the day. And while it adds charm to our homes, it also presents a design challenge—especially in older neighborhoods like Meridian-Kessler where windows and natural light vary room to room.

If you’ve ever wondered why a color looks “off” in the afternoon or why your living room feels flat in the evening, this one’s for you.

☀️ Morning Sun: Soft, Cool Light

Rooms that face east receive soft, cool-toned light early in the day. Pale neutrals and warm whites shine here. Blush pinks and soft taupes can bring a cozy balance to the cooler natural light.

Design Tip:Use layered window treatments—sheers to diffuse the brightness and roman shades or drapes to add softness and dimension.

🌤 Afternoon Shade: Warm, Muted Glow

West-facing or shaded rooms can feel dim by late afternoon. These spaces benefit from light-reflecting materials and warmer undertones in paint and textiles.

Design Tip:Opt for warm white wall colors with slight yellow or peach undertones to keep the space from feeling dull. Add mirrors or metallics to reflect light.

💡 Bonus: Lighting Is Everything

No matter the exposure, the right artificial lighting completes the design. A combination of ceiling lights, table lamps, and wall sconces used with dimmer switches will give you flexibility—especially as we approach shorter fall days.
