Your Home Doesn't Have to Fit Into One Design Style

When it comes to interior design, one of the first questions homeowners often ask is, “What is your design style?”

It is a fair question. After all, you want to know whether a designer's aesthetic aligns with your vision before inviting them into your home.

But at Sierra Troitsky Interiors, the answer is a little different.

I don't believe your home needs to fit neatly into one design style. Your home should reflect you.

Whether you gravitate toward traditional details, modern simplicity, collected interiors, cozy transitional spaces, or something completely your own, my role is to understand what you love and create a cohesive space around it.

Your Home Doesn't Have to Look Like a Pinterest Board

Design inspiration is everywhere. You might save a traditional dining room one day, a modern kitchen the next, and a colorful English-inspired bedroom the day after that.

That doesn't necessarily mean you don't know what your style is.

It means you probably have more than one influence.

Some of the most interesting interiors combine elements from different aesthetics. A traditional home can have contemporary furnishings. A modern space can incorporate vintage pieces. A neutral room can still have plenty of personality through texture, pattern, and artwork.

Rather than asking you to choose a single label, I look at the common threads between the things you love.

Maybe you consistently gravitate toward warm wood tones, soft colors, natural materials, and comfortable furniture. Those preferences can become the foundation of your design, regardless of whether the final room is considered transitional, modern, traditional, or something in between.

Design Starts With You, Not a Signature Look

Every client brings a different combination of preferences, lifestyle needs, architecture, and existing furnishings to a project. That's why I don't approach every project with the same predetermined aesthetic.

Instead, the design process begins with understanding:

  • How you want your home to feel

  • How you use your spaces every day

  • What you already own and want to keep

  • Colors and materials you're naturally drawn to

  • Design elements you love

  • Things you definitely don't want

  • Your home's architecture and existing character

  • Your practical needs and priorities

  • Your overall investment for the project

From there, we can create a design direction that feels intentional and uniquely yours.

From Traditional to Modern and Everything in Between

One of the things I love about interior design is that there isn't one right way to create a beautiful home.

Traditional & Classic

If you love timeless architecture, detailed millwork, elegant furnishings, antiques, and classic patterns, we can embrace those elements while making the space feel comfortable and current.

Transitional

For clients who appreciate a combination of traditional and contemporary design, transitional interiors offer a beautiful balance. Classic details can be paired with cleaner silhouettes, updated finishes, and more relaxed furnishings.

Modern

If you prefer clean lines, simplicity, and a more streamlined aesthetic, we can create a modern space that still feels warm and inviting through thoughtful materials, texture, lighting, and carefully selected furnishings.

Contemporary

Contemporary interiors can be sophisticated and refined without feeling cold. Interesting shapes, layered neutrals, statement lighting, and modern materials can create a polished look while still reflecting your personality.

Organic & Natural

If you are drawn to natural materials, warm woods, earthy colors, linen, stone, and relaxed furnishings, we can create a space that feels grounded and comfortable while maintaining a sophisticated aesthetic.

Eclectic & Collected

Maybe you don't want everything to match.

You might love vintage pieces, artwork from your travels, bold patterns, modern furniture, and family heirlooms. That's where an eclectic approach can be especially effective. The goal isn't to make everything coordinate perfectly. It's to create enough visual connection that the room feels collected rather than chaotic.

Colorful & Personality-Driven

If you love color, your home should have color.

Whether that means a dramatic powder room, a colorful kitchen, patterned wallpaper, or simply unexpected accents throughout your home, I can help you use color intentionally so it feels cohesive rather than overwhelming.

What If You Don't Know Your Design Style?

That's completely okay. In fact, you don't need to know your design style before working with an interior designer.

You may have a collection of saved photos, screenshots, furniture pieces, artwork, or rooms you love without knowing exactly what connects them.

That's part of what the design process is for.

I can help identify the patterns in your inspiration and translate them into a cohesive design direction. Sometimes the result isn't a recognizable style category at all. It may be a combination of several influences that feels distinctly personal to you.

Your Existing Home Matters, Too

Good design doesn't always mean starting over.

You may have a beautiful dining table you inherited from your family, a favorite chair you don't want to replace, artwork you've collected over the years, or architectural features that make your home special.

Instead of forcing those pieces into a completely different aesthetic, I look for ways to build around what already works.

This is especially important when designing Indianapolis homes with existing architectural character. The goal is to create a space that feels appropriate to the home while still reflecting the people who live there today.

Creating a Cohesive Home When Your Tastes Are Different

Another common situation is when two people living in the same home have completely different design preferences.

Maybe one person loves traditional interiors while the other prefers modern design. One wants more color while the other gravitates toward neutrals. That doesn't mean someone has to compromise on everything they love.

A designer can help identify the elements that matter most to each person and find a common visual language through scale, proportion, color, materials, and repetition.

The result can feel balanced and intentional rather than like one person's style won out over the other's.

The Goal: A Home That Feels Like You

Ultimately, I don't want someone to walk into your home and say, “This looks exactly like a Sierra Troitsky Interiors project.”

I want them to say:

“This feels like you.” My job is to bring the design expertise, resources, sourcing, planning, and creative direction to help you get there.

Your home can be traditional, modern, colorful, neutral, collected, minimal, cozy, or a combination of all of those things.

There is no requirement to fit into a box. At Sierra Troitsky Interiors, I work with you to create a home that feels cohesive, elevated, functional, and personal, regardless of where your design inspiration comes from.

Ready to create a home that feels like you?

If you're somewhere between “I know exactly what I want” and “I have no idea what my style is, but I know what I like,”you're in good company.

I'd love to learn more about your home, your ideas, and what you're hoping to create. Schedule a discovery call with Sierra Troitsky Interiors to start the conversation.
